ABOUT THE EVENT
Making Music, Not Just Playing Notes
Battle Creek Youth Orchestra Summer Camp to be held August 10,11,12 and 17,18,19
The Battle Creek Youth Orchestra is registering students for the summer camp session of Making Music, Not Just Playing Notes.
Designed to improve the performance ability of string students who have been playing their instruments for at least one year, topics to be covered during camp will include
Practice Made Easy, Staccato/Pizzicato,
Scales Can Be Fun, The Fourth Finger, Third Position, New Music: Where Do I Begin,
Sight Reading: The Professional Approach, Rests and Counting ARE Important, Time
Signatures, and The Orchestral Experience.
According to Alice Hammond, teacher
for the camp and director of Battle Creek Youth Orchestra’s Junior Strings Ensemble,
this camp will provide students with the knowledge they need to become better
musicians. “We will be offering individualized attention so the students can perfect
their skills as well as doing some ensemble playing,” Hammond said.
Covering topics that make music sound like music and not just notes played together is important too she explained. “So often students at this age just want to play the correct notes and they forget that the “musical” part comes a great deal from dynamics. Those things will be covered, too.”
Hammond also remarked that the students will have a chance to get to know other students from different schools who share the same love of playing their instrument and want to advance musically. Making Music,
Not Just Playing Notes will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, August 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19, 4:00-5:30 pm in the Parish Hall of the Church of the Resurrection, 2589 Capital Avenue SW.
Tuition for the camp is $30, pre-registration is required and can be made by calling the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra office at 269-966-2527 or by emailing at bcyouthorchestra@aol.com.
The camp is funded in part by a grant from the Battle Creek Community Foundation.
